Nine ways to meet the moment.

Karira draws on established meditation techniques to shape your session. The references below describe research on individual practices, not clinical testing of Karira. Experiences vary.

Cyclic sighing1
Long, slow exhales to settle a wound-up body. Improved mood and slowed breathing in a randomised trial.
Yoga nidra2
Guided deep rest for winding down. Studied in adults with chronic insomnia.
Self-compassion3
Meeting a harsh inner voice with some warmth. Associated with lower self-criticism across 27 trials.
Savoring4
Staying with a good moment instead of moving past it. Linked to more positive emotion across 20 trials.
Body scan
Moving attention slowly through the body, noticing what's held.
Breath anchor5
Returning attention to the breath each time it wanders.
Open awareness5
Resting attention wide, without fixing on anything.
Cognitive defusion
Watching a looping thought as a thought, rather than arguing with it.
Sensory grounding
Naming what you can see, hear and feel right now.

Before you start: questions about Karira

How is this different from Calm or Headspace?

Karira starts with a conversation about your day and uses it to create personalized guided audio. You can choose your session length and ambience, then return to saved sessions. Explore the screenshots above to see how it works.

Is what I say private?

AI and infrastructure providers process your content to deliver Karira. We do not sell your conversations or use them to train AI models. App usage analytics are linked to your account identifier, without message text. You can delete conversations or your account. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Do I need to know how to meditate "correctly"?

No. You just talk like a normal person about what's going on. Karira handles the technique — choosing the practice, writing the script, and guiding you through it out loud.

What do I get free versus premium?

Free gives you two real personalized meditations, up to 5 minutes each, plus a selection of guided library sessions. Premium opens up longer meditations — up to 15 minutes, 20 new ones a month — plus 200 chat messages a month, along with emotional memory across sessions, themes, streaks, and weekly reflections. $12.99/month, cancel anytime.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. The free tier does not automatically become a paid subscription, and there is no free trial. If you buy Premium, it renews monthly. Cancel in iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Karira at least 24 hours before renewal. You keep access until the paid period ends.

These studies are of the techniques, not of Karira. They examined these practices as traditionally delivered — usually in person, usually taught by a person, usually over weeks. Karira has not been clinically evaluated, and nothing here is a claim about what it will do for you. Several of these practices are components of longer programmes and were studied as part of the whole. Karira is a wellbeing product, not treatment. Body scan, cognitive defusion and sensory grounding are described on this page rather than claimed for: body scan reliably raises self-reported mindfulness but has not been shown to improve clinical symptoms on its own, and the other two are studied as components of wider therapies rather than as standalone practices.

Cell Reports Medicine. 2023;4(1):100895. doi:10.1016/j.xcrm.2022.100895 — 111 healthy adults, 5 min/day for one month. Cyclic sighing improved positive affect and reduced respiratory rate more than mindfulness meditation. No significant change in heart-rate variability or resting heart rate.
